Welcome to the memorial page for

Anne Hilda (Kalmbach) LEHMKUHL

May 26, 1920 ~ September 17, 2017 (age 97) 97 Years Old

Anne Hilda Lehmkuhl, age 97 years, passed away peacefully on September 17, 2017 at the Elrose Health Centre where she had resided since 2009.

Anne was born on May 26, 1920 on the family homestead near Mellowdale, Alberta, the second youngest of ten children. Her parents, Rudolph and Anna Kalmback were immigrant German farmers from Eigenfeld, Russia. Anne walked to a country school where she received her grade eight diploma. She wanted to further her education to become a nurse but as finances were not available, she helped with the chores around the farm milking many cows each day. The money generated from selling the cream provided extra clothes and groceries for the family. Anne loved to skate in the winter on the nearby frozen ponds and to play ladies’ softball and basketball during the summer. In the winter months, Anne worked in Edmonton cooking and cleaning for a family of four. It was there that she met her husband, Gordon Lehmkuhl who was taking a course in welding and diesel mechanics. They were married six months later on June 26, 1942 in Edmonton.

Anne and Gordon began their married life living in a one room bunkhouse on the farm until Gordon was able to construct a larger home. Their daughter Diane was born in 1944 and son Harley followed in 1948. Anne led an active life on the farm and in the community. She grew a large garden, canning and freezing produce for the coming year. She kept an immaculate house and earned the reputation of an ultimate hostess and an excellent cook. She devoted many years to the Elrose United Church teaching Sunday school for many years and being a charter member of the UCW. For more than 20 years, she assisted the Memorial Hall Auxiliary with the catering to various functions and was a member of the Elrose Lioness Club and Elrose Hospital Auxiliary.

Anne and Gordon were blessed during their 54 years of marriage. They enjoyed curling in the winter and building a cabin at Clearwater Lake for the family to enjoy during the summer. After the family grew up, they had many years of sheer enjoyment during the winters, golfing and socializing with new friends at their mobile home in Mesa, AZ. In 1976, Anne and Gordon retired to live in Elrose and continued their passion of golfing in the summer at North Battleford Provincial Park. With golf clubs and golf cart loaded in the back of the half ton, Anne and Muriel Hintze would regularly trek off to Eston Riverside Regional Park to play eighteen holes of golf.

Anne was predeceased by her husband Gordon in 1997 and her brothers and sisters Waldemar, Emma Fluet, Elsie, Frederick, Ernest Rudolph, Martha Cunningham, Oscar, Cecelia Evans and Paul.

Anne will be dearly missed by her daughter Diane (Don) Minogue and family Vaughn, Kelley and children Anthony and Mariah; son Harley (Darline) Lehmkuhl and family Leanne (Jeff) Dafoe and daughter Kaitlyn;  Jamie (Rheanne) Lehmkuhl and children Julian and Aurora; Cindy (Robert) Wilinski and children Emily, Billy and Jesse; Amy (Stuart) Jans and children Kasey and son Austin and Haley and Jim (Melissa) Wilinski and children Keegan, Daxen and Avery.

The service of celebration of Anne’s life was held on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at the Elrose United Church with Mr. Jim MacNaughton officiating. Memorial Donations may be made to the Elrose Health Centre Auxiliary, P.O. Box 100, Elrose, SK S0L 2V0.
