Mrs. Jean Eleanor Backlund née Walker passed away at Rose Villa, Rosetown, SK. on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 at the age of 90.
Jean was born July 29, 1923 in Aberdeen, Scotland to William and Mary Walker the second youngest of six children. She was raised at Banchory where she received her education and worked as a baker. Jean became a war bride on June 20, 1942 when she married Eric Backlund. She emigrated to Canada and she and Eric settled in the Dodsland area. Eric was a section man with the railway and they lived in several communities throughout the prairies, moving to Rosetown in1970. In 1980, Jean and Eric's only daughter Janey moved to Rosetown to live with them. Following Eric's passing in 1986, Jean continued to live at home until she became a resident of the Nursing Wing in 2012. Jean enjoyed life, a fact made possible when she became a recipient of a heart pacemaker in 1964. Over the years she enjoyed singing in many different choirs and choral groups, reading and did excellent handiwork.
Jean is survived by her daughter Janey Johnson of Rosetown; and numerous nieces and nephews in Scotland. She was predeceased by her husband Eric in January 1986; her parents William and Mary Walker née Slessor; brother Alexander; and sisters Barbara, Mary, Dorothy and Anne.
Memorial service was held on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Rosetown United Church with Reverend Jo-Ann Hills officiating. Donations in memory of Jean may be directed to Rose Villa Activity Fund, P.O. Box 850, Rosetown, Sask. S0L 2V0.
