Alberta "Bert" Mae (Henderson) BLACKLOCK

July 28, 1927 ~ January 9, 2024 (age 96) 96 Years Old

Alberta "Bert" BLACKLOCK Obituary

The death of Alberta Mae Blacklock (nee Henderson) age 96, occurred January 9, 2024 in the Outlook Long Term Care.

Bert was born July 28, 1927 in Lacombe, Alberta.  As Mom followed her brother Don daily the half mile to school – they let her stay, so she started school at age four and a half.

In 1938 at the Calgary calf feeding competition, she won her first Grand Champion of many.

Sewing, cooking, playing piano in a band, curling, working at an insurance agency, showing cattle and chores filled her time until she met her life mate Ben Blacklock.  They were married November 10, 1951 because there were no bull sales that day.

They first lived outside Prince Albert but with Ben’s poor health they moved to Saskatoon where Ben became the auctioneer for the Saskatoon Stockyards.

In 1961 the move to present day Benlock Farms was just what they wanted. Building an Angus herd, leading 4-H, Sunday school, politics, fowl suppers and curling were intermixed with travel and a new sales management venture.

Bert moved to Saskatoon when Ben passed away in 1987.  She and Tom began selling beef at the Farmers Market, another new venture.

Surviving Bobbie Crossman, Tom and Shawnda Blacklock, Virginia and Bob Nelson (Shaelynn, Dustin), Ian and Carla Crossman (Daman, Keagan, Carsan, Teanna), Liza Peter (Raiden, Cruz, Avaya), Riley Blacklock, Madison and Nate Smart (Winston), Morgan and Maxton Heise, and many nieces and nephews.

A true lady of substance, in her own way…one who could proudly claim the title daughter, wife, mother, career woman as a well as doctor, lawyer, or Indian chief within her own domain, farm hand, secretary, bookkeeper, entertainment coordinator.  A fine lady proud of her agricultural heritage, a lady who moved forward past difficulties she needed to overcome and one who certainly didn’t let grass grow under her feet.

Donations can be made to University Relations, University of Saskatchewan, G16 Thorvaldson Bld., 110 Science PI., Saskatoon, SK, S7N 5C9. Make cheques payable to the University of Saskatchewan. Include a note indicating donation is for the Ben Blacklock Memorial Bursary.
