Cecil HUNTER Obituary

It is with sadness in our hearts that we share the news of the passing of our husband, dad, and papa, Cecil Charles Hunter on March 8, 2023 at the age of 70.  Cecil slipped away peacefully with his family by his side after a month long stay in the hospital.

Cecil was born November 14, 1952 in Rosetown, SK to the parents of Jimmy and Hazel Hunter.  He was raised on the family farm northwest of Elrose attending school in Wartime and later in Elrose.  After graduating from high school, he started farming on his own as his dad had passed away when he was 10.  Cecil had a strong love for horses and cattle, so it was only natural he became involved in the sport of rodeo.  It was at a team roping in Saskatoon that he met the love of his life, Brenda Barnes and they were married 4 months later on November 5, 1977.  Together they had 2 children, Holly Lynn born in 1982 and James Russell born in 1987.

Cecil and his wife Brenda raised performance Paint and Quarter horses, longhorn cattle, and black angus cattle along with running a grain farm. But it is safe to say that Cec loved being a cowboy more than a farmer. He competed at both ends of the arena riding bulls, bareback horses, calf roping, and team roping.  His brother Lorrie shared his love and the two of them were a formidable team in the roping competition. After his competition days were over, he became a Canadian Cowboys Association rodeo judge for many years.

Cecil had a passion for hockey and an intense love for the game.  He was a goaltender when he played.  He coached teams in Elrose from 1970 to 2005 and throughout those years many teams went on to win championships.  Cecil also had a deep connection with nature and loved hunting and fishing.

Cecil was a loving and supportive husband and father.  He was very proud of his family and their accomplishments.  In the last few years, his greatest enjoyment and pride were his grandchildren.

Cecil changed the lives of many people and had a profound impact upon those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Cecil is survived by his wife Brenda, children Holly (Gaylen) Frischholz and Jim (Sarah) Hunter as well as two grandchildren Greyson and Sage Hunter. Cecil is also survived by two sisters Beverly (Barrie) Nelson, Joan (Loren) Siemens and one brother Lorrie (Lona) Hunter as well as in-laws, nieces, and nephews.  He was predeceased by his parents Jim and Hazel Hunter and infant sister Marion.

The family is very thankful for the wonderful care that Cecil received at the Rosetown Hospital.

A Funeral Service was held on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at the Elrose Memorial Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Cecil may be directed to the
