It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Douglas Harold Hammond of Elrose, SK on September 4, 2024 at the age of 75. Doug was born on October 19, 1948 to Richard and Henrietta Hammond. His early years were filled with hockey, baseball, horseback riding and summers at Clearwater Lake. Doug completed his schooling in Elrose, and then worked at Poli Twine in Saskatoon for two years.
In 1969 Doug returned to the family farm in Elrose. For Doug, farming was his occupation, but cattle were his passion. When he wasn’t at the farm, Doug kept himself busy supporting many community activities. He enjoyed poker nights and anything going on at the Elrose Uniplex. But most of all, Doug always had time for his friends. He retired from farming after 48 years in 2017 when his health no longer allowed him to continue.
Doug is survived by his wife of 55 years Sheila Hammond (née Sothmann); his daughter Shannon (Arny) Froese; his son Trent (Lisa) Hammond and his three grandsons Brody Froese, Case Hammond and Ryder Hammond who meant the world to him. He is also survived by his brother Alan (Jean) Hammond; sisters Mary Hammond, Peggy Mackenzie, Beverly (Cliff) Orriss as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Doug was predeceased by his parents Richard and Henrietta Hammond, his in-laws Elvin and Dorothy Sothmann, brothers-in-law Jack Mackenzie and Ralph Sothman, sister in-law Karin Sothmann, nephew Paul Cruse and grandson Shaydon Froese.
We will always remember Doug’s fun-loving personality, unconditional generosity, never expecting anything in return from his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
The Celebration of Doug’s Life was held on Monday, September 9, 2024 at 2:00 PM at the Elrose Memorial Hall. A video of the service is available to watch here.
