Ethel GILKINSON Obituary

With love and gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Ethel May Gilkinson at the amazing age of 98 years. Although we are saddened to say goodbye, we take comfort in knowing that Ethel has been joyfully received into heaven, reunited with her loved ones, and embraced by the peace of God’s love.
Born on August 10, 1926, in Eston, Sask., to parents Ray and Mable Boyd, Ethel spent her young life growing up on a farm near Richlea. On January 19, 1948 Ethel married Ken Gilkinson. They later moved to Isham where they raised their two sons Danny and Joe.  Ethel loved being a mother and her boys were very lucky to spend summers at Clearwater Lake swimming, boating, fishing and having fun.
After Joe’s car accident in 1979, Ken and Ethel uprooted their lives and moved to Swift Current to help in his care. They spent many hours at the Palliser care home with Joe and grew to consider the staff there friends. They were very devoted to Joe’s care and ensuring he always had companionship. In Swift Current she formed many friendships, particularly with those from her church.
Ethel was predeceased by her husband, Ken (2004), her dear son, Joe (2008) and her infant daughter Charla (1967). Ethel is survived by her son Danny (Lana) and her Grandchildren Devon (Caley), Carrie (Samson), and Jessica (Tyler) and her 7 Great Grandchildren who she loved to receive letters and cards from. Ethel lived for visits from her family. Even into her late 90’s her always sharp memory kept her right in the loop with what grade each Great Grandchild was in and what activities they were involved with.
Ethel spent the last 8 years of her life in the Elrose Health Centre. She was very well taken care of and loved all the staff there. She was thankful for the kindness and care she received in the final years of her life.
Ethel was a very special person and always made sure to tell her family how special they were too. She could always be relied upon to offer heartfelt prayers and a gentle presence.  Even as she aged Ethel had an adventurous spirit, being it deciding to learn how to swim in her 70’s, or taking her first motorcycle ride at almost 90, she never stopped living her life to find joy. She will be remembered for her kindness, her unwavering faith, and her love for her family.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

A video tribute of photos was put together by Ethel's granddaughter Carrie can be viewed at this link.
