On October 18, 2023, Florence Mary Dowie (née MacDonald) passed away peacefully at age 100.
Florence is lovingly remembered by her daughter Arlene Wharington and family: Brett (Jacqueline) Zabolotney and children Austin and Preston, Lane (Karen) Zabolotney and children Blake and Paige; daughter Lynda Jones and family: Kirsten and daughter Jade, Ryan, Tara and children Evelyn, Melody, and Kaleb; daughter in-law Mary Jo Dowie and family: Jim (Sarah) and children Marshall and Bryce, Andrew (Mary); sister Edna Jonasson; sister in-law Mary MacDonald and several nieces and nephews.
Florence was predeceased by husband Charles S. Dowie, granddaughter Krista Zabolotney, son Stuart Dowie, stepson James Dowie, siblings Isabelle Persson, Johnny MacDonald, Doug MacDonald, James MacDonald, Margaret Hodgins, Lillian MacDonald and Gordon MacDonald.
Florence was born on the farm in the Alluvia district on July 22, 1923, the fifth born of nine children. She was raised on a farm in the Zealandia district, attending school at Alluvia and Zealandia. In October 1953, she married Charles Dowie and they raised their family on the farm near Zealandia.
Florence devoted her life to her children and the role of homemaker. Through the years she enjoyed sewing matching dresses for her daughters, time at the cabin, curling, and golfing during winters in California. Florence was a master trucker at harvest time and took pride in providing piping hot meals to those working in the field. Though reserved in manner, she had a sense of humour enjoyed by her daughters’ friends who still muse about those memories.
The family will have a private celebration of life, as per Florence’s wishes. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Florence may be directed to Ronald McDonald House, 1011 University Drive, Saskatoon, SK, S7N0K4 or the Alex Ositis Foundation, P.O. Box 1251, Rosetown SK, S0L 2V0 or a charity of your choice.
