Gwynne McCULLOCH Obituary

Gwynne (“Chainsaw”) William McCulloch

March 1, 1954 - June 11, 2024

It is with profound sadness that the family of Gwynne McCulloch announce his passing on June 11, 2024, at the age of 70. Gwynne leaves behind his sons Jadynne (Tonya), Jesse (Cailey), James (Kate), his sister Lynne Cross and their families. He also leaves behind numerous lifelong friends who will miss him dearly. Gwynne was predeceased by his wife Bev McCulloch and his parents Edith and Jim McCulloch.

Gwynne’s roots were in Rosetown, SK where he worked at the local service station during his high school years, fostering a love for today's classic cars and the stories that came with them. Gwynne married his high school sweetheart, Bev, and they moved to Saskatoon to start their life together. After graduating from the RCMP Depot, Gwynne began his policing career at the Saskatoon Airport, later joining the Saskatoon City Police Service. His tenure included fourteen years in the Canine Unit, followed by lengthy roles in the Drug Unit and the Surveillance Unit.

Gwynne, to most of us, was better known as “Chainsaw”, the nickname he proudly carried throughout his adult life. Chainsaw's legendary moustache was a staple; he only shaved it once in his life that we can recall. The nickname and moustache made him memorable – which meant someone always knew him wherever he went.

Gwynne was immensely proud of his three boys. Like many Canadian parents he was constantly on the go, taking them to hockey rinks, baseball fields, golf courses, skateboard parks, and ski hills. Always hardworking, he took on side jobs of drywalling and installing sprinklers to ensure the family could enjoy many adventures. He enjoyed playing beer league hockey, helping Mom with the garden, and spent many hours caring for the yard, always striving for the best lawn on the block. Family camping trips, and fishing trips with friends - especially to the cabin at Chitek Lake - were some of his favorite activities. Before kids, he took many storied trips into the backcountry with lifelong friends to embrace “God’s Country”.

He cherished several trips to Mexico with Bev, making friends on the beach and sharing laughs at happy hour. In retirement, Gwynne enjoyed golfing with Bev and the grandkids, picking up the odd drywalling job, and working at a local car rental service. He proudly stayed well-informed on Saskatoon’s local news, the 6:00pm news was a must watch in our home. In the later years Gwynne, Bev and their dogs, Bairn and Rider would stay up late to enjoy some good laughs and quality time together while tuning in to their favourite TV shows.

The subtle memories of freshly cut grass, the bustling hockey rinks, the long drives with a cracked window, and countless other cherished moments will remind us of Dad’s dedication to his family and the beautiful home life he maintained.

Tributes in Gwynne’s memory may be made to a meaningful charity of your choice or to Ronald McDonald House. The celebration of Gwynne’s life was held at the United Church in Rosetown, SK on Wednesday, June 19th at 11:00 A.M.
