Helen SIMPSON Obituary

Helen Anna Marie Simpson passed away May 8, 2019 at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon.

Helen was born February 7, 1929 on the farm at Valley Centre, daughter of the late Granny (Helen) and Peter Bohun. She attended Marriot school until her teens when she moved to Rosetown to attend high school and board at St. Josephs’ Convent.

After graduation she enrolled in a stenographer’s class and when finished, got a job with the Department of Highways in Rosetown, which she loved and took great pride in.

It wouldn’t be long though, before she met the love of her life; Lawrence Simpson. They were married on October 3, 1947 and had five kids.

Together they farmed for 56 years, and in addition to grain, they raised cattle, chickens, turkeys and pigs. Every year they grew at least a half-acre of garden which fed them, and their family and they loved to share the bounty with neighbors and friends. During the summer and fall Helen would spend countless hours in the kitchen, preparing meals to take to the field, canning fruit, freezing vegetables, preserving jam, and making pies (her kids still argue over which was the best). She also made the best bread which led to many stabbings and near-death experiences over the years when her children would fight for the crust. Lawrence always said Helen should open a restaurant. He also said he should get a sidecar for his motorbike so she could ride along. Neither of which ever happened.

Helen loved animals (specially dogs), music (specially listening to Lawrence play), her kids and grandkids; she enjoyed being part of the Birthday Circle Club and visiting with friends and neighbors over a cup of coffee and a sweet treat.

Helen is survived by her daughter Lorna Davies, son Bill (Kathy) Simpson, son Murray (Sandra) Simpson, son Norrie Simpson and daughter Brenda (Jack) Reid; grandchildren David Archer, Jeremiah Simpson, Renee Archer, Jennifer Heimbecker, Nicole Baker, Stewart Simpson, and Will Simpson; 17 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law a brother-in-law as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Lawrence, grandson Jimmy, son-in-law Douglas Davies, mother Helen Bohun and brother Jim Stanek.
