John Donald (Don) Spence passed away peacefully on July 28, 2025 at the age of 83. Don was born near Hawarden, SK on November 25, 1941 to Ramsay Spence originally from Hunter River, PEI and Edith Forsberg from Macrorie, SK. He married Peggy Taylor in Glenside, SK on June 18, 1966.
Don was a loving father to his four children Kellie, Jay, Jaime and Taylor. He taught Kellie how to ride horses, she loved cleaning the barn instead of helping with housework. Don’s love of hockey was shared with Jay and Jaime and he spent many hours at the rink with them. Taylor was Don’s right hand man following him around ready to hand him the tools he needed. Don was a councillor for the RM of Loreburn in Division 5 from 1975 to 2016. His love of the farm ran deep and he spent the majority of his life in the farm yard he grew up in.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Peggy, children Kellie (Chris) McKenzie, Jay (Aaron), Jaime (Alvin Patterson) and Taylor. Along with his 5 grandchildren, Cole (Tessa) McKenzie, Brock (Maddy) McKenzie, Hailey, Rylee and Sawyer Spence and two great grandchildren, Winnie and Wacey McKenzie. Don is also survived by his brother in law Harold Wills along with many nieces and nephews.
Don is pre-deceased by his parents Ramsay & Edith Spence, sister Darlene Wills, infant brother, in-laws Norman & Norma Taylor, Dale Taylor, Don & Marilyn Taylor, Bob Taylor, Ray & Shelby Jersak and Sharon Laird.
A family interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Diabetes Canada or to the donation of your choice in memory of Don.
Thank you to the staff of the Outlook Long Term Care Facility for the special care Don received over the last 2 years.
Take Me Home - by Taylor Spence
Take me home
It’s what I need
To see the old fields of gold
To be free
Take me home
Where they roam
In pastures of green
He fought a war
No one could see
No gunfire no revelry
Just silent hopes and lots of dreams
Take him home
Take me home
It’s what I need
To see those old fields of gold
To be free
Take me home
Where they roam
In pastures of green
He fought a war
That now is over
No cheering no revelry
Just a man
A loving husband and father
No hero but to you and me
Take him home
Take me home
It’s what I need
To see those old fields of gold
To be free
Take me home
Where they roam
In the pastures of green
Now I am home
In those fields of gold
Where they roam in pastures of green
Forever free
So don’t you worry
About me
I’m home now
Where I need to be.
