Lois "Loie" HOUSTON Obituary

Loie was born in Lacadena hospital on February 2, 1930, to parents Laura (Minogue) and Henry Goheen. She was the 4th child of 9 children: Six sisters and two brothers. Both of her parents came from large families as well, so family gatherings were extensive, and sense of community and connection were ingrained at a young age with so many cousins and aunts and uncles.

Loie went to school in Lacadena; by horse and in wintertime rode in an enclosed boxcutter sleigh. She enjoyed sports such as softball in the summers and curling during the winter months. John Colin Houston and Lois went to school together and were smitten from a young age. They married on August 12th of 1947, and moved to John’s uncle Ira’s farm just 3 miles West of Lacadena. Being that she was the eldest daughter to remain closest to home, she helped her mother at home with her siblings and when her grandfather moved in. She became a good cook and gardener and was always up for hosting company even if they dropped in on short notice. She belonged to the United Church Women’s Association, sang in the choir since the age of 14, taught Sunday school, helped with CGIT and youth group. She was a proud member of the Farm Women’s Club for over 60 years. She also loved music and played the piano and always knitted; more than 100 afgan’s over the years. Loie enjoyed following her children Russ ’49, Keith ’53 and Joan ’55 to all their activities then later came spouses, 6 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She was always an enthusiastic spectator attending school sports, music recitals, 4H, chuckwagon, hockey, figure skating, curling, rodeo’s, swimming, golf, lacrosse, graduations, weddings, and never tired of keeping up with hearing about different jobs, travels, and endeavors of family, friends, neighbours and others in the community. Loie had an incredible memory and thoroughly knew local history. She could recall specific people, places and events; marriages, divorces, births, deaths; connections and relations over the decades and generations, starting from before her time. On the odd chance she couldn’t remember someone or a part of the story in a conversation, you can be sure that she would complete the conversation the next time you visited and likely would have a photo to pair the memory with.

Loie and John resided for 57 years on the farm. She moved to Eston in 2004, when John moved to Eston Lodge, unfortunately he passed away a year later, but Loie remained in the same home until recently. She passed away peacefully in Elrose Health Centre June 14, 2025, at the age of 95 years old.

Loie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings (Eleanor, Doris, Ray, Kathy, Leonard and Marj; sister in-law Marlene, brother in-law’s Red, Bob, Burt; son in-law’s Terry and Ron and daughter in-law Connie
