Marlene Sharon Gabriel (nee Feeley), aged 74, of Rosetown, SK passed away peacefully on the evening of March 29, 2025.
Marlene was born on May 29, 1950 to Frank and Lillie Feeley. She started her life in Maymont, SK, where her father ran the local motel. Three and a half years later her little sister, Janet, joined their family. At the age of nine they moved to Saskatoon, where she spent the rest of her school years. After high school, Marlene went to the University of Saskatchewan and received her teaching certificate. She taught her first year in Saskatoon and then moved to the small Howard Powell School in 1972. This is where she met and then married her husband, Frank, a local farmer and began the next chapter of her life on the farm.
In 1977, Frank and Marlene welcomed their first child, daughter Tanya. Then came their son, Collin, in 1979. On the farm Marlene had many jobs. She grew and loved her huge garden, experimenting with lots of different vegetables and trees. With that came many hours of canning and baking. Feeding the farm crew was very important to her. She kept a list in her pantry of everyone’s likes and dislikes when it came to food to make sure that she did her best to keep the work crew happy. Bringing meals to the field, running errands, and driving the grain truck during the busy farm season was a full-time job. In the winter months she was a substitute teacher, and took great pride in preparing fun lessons plans like bubble gum and popcorn days. During this time, she also started teaching ESL with her dear friend Joan. One of Marlene’s great accomplishments was going back to university to get her Bachelor’s of Education degree.
In 2016, after Frank’s passing, she moved into her beloved condo in Rosetown. Here she was able to join many groups such as Red Hats, Cancer Support, Widows Luncheon and served on the Library Board. She also spent a few winters doing library story time. Her free time was spent playing the piano for many school Christmas concerts, listening to ABBA, watching curling, gardening, and reading. The winters that she was able to spend in Palm Springs with Janet were some of her happiest. The love and care of grandchildren was her full-time job in her later years. Her grandchildren brought her the greatest joy.
She is survived by her daughter, Tanya and children; Rebecca, Carson and Macy; son, Collin (Lindy) and children; Abby and Ethan, son-in-law, Kevin, and sister, Janet (Lorne) Kotlar and her nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank and her father, Frank and mother, Lillie.
A Celebration of Marlene’s Life will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the Rosetown United Church.
