Matthew SPEIR Obituary

A Video Recording of the service may be viewed here.

It is with our deepest sadness that we announce the passing of Matthew James Speir on Sunday, October 12, 2025.

Matt was born August 15, 1978, at the Kindersley Union Hospital to Bob and Sue Speir and raised on the family farm near Brock, SK. He attended Brock School for Kindergarten to Grade 6, then moved to Westberry School in Kindersley for Grade 7 followed by graduating at Kindersley Composite High School.

His next chapter saw he moving to Saskatoon where he pursued a Degree in Agriculture majoring in Crop Science at the University of Saskatchewan, a place that he found his passion for the business and science of farming as well as the people who shared his love of the land, hard work and what Saskatchewan had to offer.

Following a short time in Ag sales he returned home in 2003 to the family farm in Brock to pursue his passion for farming/business while also teaching environmental farm planning workshops with PCAB.

Shortly after, through her brother Cameron (which Matt had become close friends with while playing senior hockey with the Rosetown Redwings) he met the love of his life Heather and they were married in the summer of 2006 in a wonderful outdoor ceremony surrounded by countless family and friends from across the country and the world. They built the farm and a life together welcoming three amazing children: Jane in 2007, Sonny in 2009 and William in 2011.

Matt had deep love of sports and competition including hockey, baseball, curling, downhill skiing and water sports. This passion coupled with his incredible commitment to give back to his community lead him to coach countless kids over the past 15 years. In addition, he also built deep roots in the community through organizations such as the Brock Rink Board, Rosetown Ball Board, Hay Coop and PFRA Pasture Board

He forged deep friendships and memories with countless people over the years laughing, passing the guitar and singing around the campfire, travelling through Australia and New Zealand, playing cards and board games.

It has often been said that Matt lit up a room with smile, his charm and powerful presence.

A Celebration of Matt’s Life was held at the Rosetown Civic Center on Saturday, October 18, 2025 at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, to celebrate and honour Matthew’s life, donations can be forwarded to the Kindersley & District Health and Wellness Foundation (Chemotherapy), Alex Ositis Foundation or Brock Rink on his behalf.
