Peter Warren (“Warren”) Peterson passed away peacefully in Outlook, Saskatchewan, on March 27, 2025, at the age of 87. He was born on June 16, 1937, in Wadhope, Manitoba. His family moved several times between southern Manitoba (Gunton) and northwestern Ontario (Pickle Crow) before settling in Madsen, Ontario, north of Red Lake. He often shared stories of running barefoot over stubble fields and riding the grain wagon to the elevator in southern Manitoba, as well as swimming, hunting partridge and rabbit in northwestern Ontario.
Warren’s first job was working underground in the Madsen gold mine as a diamond driller. As a young man, he worked for the Dryden Paper Company as a timber cruiser and recalled how once his crew was marooned overnight when their boat struck a reef on Dinorwic Lake. Warren began working at the Alex Wilson Coldstream Ltd. printing company in Dryden in 1965, where he worked laying-out film strips of set text and images to produce printing plates.
Warren married Ericka Judith Ann (“Judy”) Pross in 1969, and together they had two children: son Gregory and daughter Aaron. Warren retired from Wilson’s in 2002. In 2016, he and Judy moved to Outlook, Saskatchewan, to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
Warren was a devoted husband, dad, papa, and grandpa. He was actively involved in his kids' and grandkids' activities, ferrying them to school events, Cubs and Brownies, figure skating, and hockey. Warren was a life-long woodworker and spent many evenings and weekends creating everything from a log cabin on the south shore of Larson Bay on Wabigoon Lake to detailed wooden steam locomotive toys. He was often found up to his elbows in sawdust, turning bowls on the lathe or working on other building projects sparked by his imagination. Warren also enjoyed spending time in the woods hiking, snowmobiling, camping, and hunting, and he passed on his love of the wilderness to his children and grandchildren. When he was a young man, he claimed to have had "the fastest boat on Wabigoon Lake."
Warren was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Hilda Peterson (Dryden, ON), his sister Joyce (New Westminster, BC), and his brother Calvin (Dartmouth, NS). He is survived by his wife Judy; son Gregory, daughter-in-law Tammy, and grandchildren Oskar and Cora (Saskatoon, SK); daughter Aaron, son-in-law Kevin Kruger, and grandchildren Caymen and Kyla (Cochrane, AB); and his sister Carole and brother-in-law Art Keays (Saskatoon, SK). Warren was a supportive and positive influence on everyone who knew him. He will be greatly missed.
Donations in his memory can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or your local SPCA.
