Velma Lorraine (McClure) MERRITT

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Velma Lorraine Merritt on August 9, 2020 at the age of 84. 

Velma was predeceased by her parents Hugh & Olive McClure, brother Mel McClure, husband Jack Merritt and son Gene Merritt.  She is survived by her three daughters Mona Merritt, Lisa Merritt (Jon Showell) and Darcy Connery (James Connery), her four grandchildren Amy & Kara Showell, Jenna & Ryan Connery and her sister Sharon Burant.

Velma was born in Kelfield, SK on August 5, 1936 and grew up in Saskatoon. She attended Marvel Beauty School and began her career in hairdressing.  Velma met Jack Merritt of Plenty, SK and they were married on September 16, 1961. She became a small-town farmers’ wife and helped on the farm driving truck during harvest for many years.  She also kept busy doing hair for all the local ladies in the salon she ran out of her house.  After Jack passed away in 2005, she sold the house in Plenty and moved back to Saskatoon.  Velma enjoyed reading, doing puzzles, card nights with friends and watching curling, tennis and her beloved Blue Jays. 

There will be no funeral service at her request.  Burial will be held by the family at Plenty Cemetery at a later date.  Many thanks to the caregivers at Parkridge Centre in Saskatoon for their wonderful care the last two years.  If you wish, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan, 301-2550 12th Avenue, Regina, SK, S4P 3X1.
