It is with great sadness that the family of Joan (née Kelly) Wilkie announce her unexpected and peaceful passing on January 1st, 2012 at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, SK. at the age of 85.
Joan was born in Moorepark, CA. on December 5th, 1926 to John and Nella Kelly. She resided in North Hollywood until the age of 10 when her family relocated to Saskatchewan settling in the Wiseton area. After completing her education in 1946 Joan followed her passion and went on to teach elementary school in the Wiseton area. She considered it a privilege to teach in the same district for many years, teaching the parents and children of many families in the community. Joan married George in 1949 and together they raised their son John on the farm. Joan, as well as teaching, took an active role in the farming operation until George's passing in 1996. After one winter on her own at the farm, she relocated to Saskatoon in the spring of 1997. Joan was an excellent cook, enjoyed needlework, playing the piano and was active in the ceramics club, UCW and was a committee member to produce the Wiseton history book for 1905 -1980. Joan will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends as a sweet and gentle soul that had a great love of family, friends and community.
The family would like to thank the staff at Willowgrove Care Home for their exceptional care of Joan over the last 3 1/2 years.
Joan is survived by her daughter-in-law Laurine "Laurie" of Outlook (Ken Coulter); grandson Shane (Megan) Wilkie of Lacombe; granddaughter Shanda (Shawn) Walker of Calgary; seven great-grandchildren; Nolan, McKinley, Danaeya (and one on the way) Wilkie; Dylan, Mitchell, Tyson and Payton Walker; sister-in-law Barbara Sparrow of Vanscoy; brother-in-law William (Jean) Wilkie of Vancouver; special cousin Beth Strachan of Vancouver and numerous nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by infant son William; husband George; brother-in-law Merle Sparrow; sister Irene Kelly and son John "Jack".
Celebration of Life for the late Joan (née Kelly) Wilkie was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at Wiseton Memorial Hall. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations may be made to Wiseton United Church, Wiseton Memorial Hall or charity of one's choice.
